Hi! :)
Could we not propose a bittorrent solution or p2p one. Maybe if more users here could spare a bit of his U/D bandwith...
It's just a proposition and I'm not sure it's realisable...

Hi,
Marcus Schopen set up an arch-mirror at ftp.archlinux.de two weeks ago. A look
at the logs shows, that 65 % of the overall traffic (read: costs) is caused
by people downloading arch-0.5.iso.
In the forums I've seen many threads where people run into problems installing
arch-0.5 from cd (with all whistles and blows like X, KDE, etc.pp.) and then
try to upgrade it via net. The usual tip is: Only install base and then
upgrade via net.
Just an example: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=14872)
This is a silly situation: First people download a large ISO-image ("just to
be sure to have all things they need to install, but sometimes less is
more"), install X, KDE, etc.pp. from it, then run pacman -Syu, downloading
nearly all packages as updated packages again, only to run into problems.
My proposal: Let us drop the Arch-Full-ISO-Image and let us promote the
Arch-Base-ISO in favour of that. The full ISO costs bandwith and ends up in
people complaining about problems when updating.
We should better provide a simple howto for people who need the packages on CD
for offline-installations. Something like: Howto rsync a package repository,
burn this packages on CD and install additional packages from a local
repository.
What do you think?
Cheers, Maik
